Nike Pegasus 39 SHIELD Review

Best Winter Running Shoe?

Is the Nike Pegasus 39 Shield the best winter running shoe? It is not far off! This year the Nike Pegasus 39 sort of came back to life with an improved version. The Peg 37 and 38 were dreadful but model 39 defiantly gave me hope that this shoe is not done and dusted! The Shield version gets a 'weatherproof' upgrade meaning it has a water repellent upper and meaty outsole to cope with Winter conditions.

Stats & Features

  • £115

  • React foam and two air units

  • Knit material in the upper keeps your feet warm

  • Skins around the toes are placed in areas where water can seep in

  • With an upper inspired by Aeroloft technology, water repels off your shoe

  • Storm-Tread outsole

  • 8 mm drop (not confirmed)

  • Fits TTS

Upper

The second most important update on this shoe is the upper. They have improved the shoe in terms of protection but man it is warm in there! Personally I find it too warm they could have done with turning it down a bit in terms of lining on the shoe! I do like the upper and overall fit of the shoe, it definitely delivers in terms of protection from the elements.

Midsole

React foam is so boring and dull. Even with the two air pods in here it does not fix the ride. It really is a boring shoe to run in. The Saucony Endorphin Speed Run Shield last year was the perfect example of how to make a fun winter running shoe. React foam does get better over time and can take a while to break in but I have had mine a fair amount of time now and they really are a terrible, boring ride.

Outsole

The one and only reason I buy this shoe every year is the outsole! They nail it every year with the Nike Pegasus 39 Shield outsole. It provides plenty of grip and lasts for an eternity. I don't think you can beat this shoe for outsole grip in the winter.

Value

£115 is the official price but I have already seen these under £100! If you can pick them up for under £100 they will be perfect for winter and will get you through some of those horrible days we get in the winter.

Does it make you feel awesome?

No this shoe does not but it does make you feel warm and relatively safe on slippery winter roads which is actually a positive. It is dull and boring but I need this shoe to keep me upright during the winter months which it does.

Yah or Nah?

Yah from me but only because of the outsole and I like staying upright when running! Some daily trainers have terrible outsoles (Saucony come to mind) and these Peg 39 really do rock it out when it comes to winter grip. Yes the shoe is boring and will give you no feedback but you don't buy it for that, it is there so keep you standing up the right way during winter!
