The Altra Experience Flow 2 is a smartly updated version of Altra’s mid-drop daily trainer, designed to blend the brand’s natural running philosophy with broader accessibility. With a softer new foam compound and thoughtful upper improvements, this shoe now feels more inviting and versatile—especially for runners curious about lower-drop footwear without diving into zero-drop territory.
Why Consider Altra?
Altra is known for its foot-shaped toe boxes and low-to-zero heel-to-toe drop designs, all intended to encourage a more natural running gait. Unlike many traditional shoes that push the toes inward or elevate the heel significantly, Altra allows your foot to splay and function more naturally.
For those not quite ready for zero drop (like in the Altra Torin 8), the Experience Flow series offers a smoother transition. With a 4mm drop and now a much-improved ride, the Experience Flow 2 may be Altra’s most approachable option yet.
What’s New in the Flow 2?
Compared to the original, the Experience Flow 2 sees major upgrades:
Price: £130 (often available with discounts)
Stack Height: 32mm heel / 28mm forefoot (4mm drop)
Weight: 253g (UK 9.5)
Midsole: Updated EGO P35 foam (softer and more responsive)
Upper: Redesigned for improved comfort and breathability
Outsole: Durable rubber with great grip
Fit: True to size, with Altra’s standard roomy toe box
The biggest improvement is the switch to EGO P35, a softer, more cushioned foam that dramatically enhances underfoot feel. It gives the Flow 2 a smoother, more forgiving ride, while maintaining Altra’s signature natural geometry.
Ride Feel & Performance
On foot, the difference between this version and the previous one is immediate. The EGO P35 foam offers a balanced, slightly soft ride that works well for easy runs, recovery miles, and daily training. It's not mushy, but it’s noticeably more comfortable than the original model’s firmer platform.
The outsole provides solid traction and durability, and the updated upper is secure, breathable, and well-padded in the right places. Heel lockdown, tongue cushioning, and overall fit are all on point.
What We Like
✅ Softer, more forgiving midsole with EGO P35
✅ Simple, classic design that looks great
✅ Excellent outsole durability and grip
✅ Spacious toe box and natural foot positioning
✅ Lightweight, well-built daily trainer
✅ Strong value, especially with a discount
Things to Consider
⚠️ Not ideal for those who prefer 8–12mm drop shoes
⚠️ Some runners may need time to adjust to the 4mm drop
⚠️ A bit niche for runners who stick strictly to max-stack or plated shoes
Who Should Try It?
This shoe is ideal for:
Runners exploring lower-drop footwear
Anyone looking for a natural ride without going fully zero-drop
Those who value toe space and foot-shaped design
Daily trainers who want a break from max-cushioned or plated shoes
Runners returning from injury and seeking a stable, balanced ride
