The ASICS Cumulus 27 is the latest iteration in the brand's lineup of neutral daily trainers. It’s designed to serve as a reliable option for everyday runners, but it raises the question: is this new model worth your investment, or should you go with the previous versions like the Cumulus 25 or 26, which are now available at a lower price?
Features and Specifications
The Cumulus 27 comes with several familiar features, including a Flight Foam Blast Plus midsole, Pure Gel cushioning in the heel, and the FluidRide outsole, which is made from a rubberized EVA for durability. The shoe boasts a stack height of 38mm in the heel with a 10mm drop, providing that comfortable, neutral cushioning that daily trainers are known for. Weighing in at 294 grams, it fits true to size and delivers a solid, stable ride. The upper design feels relatively fresh, but other than that, not much has changed compared to the previous version.
Comfort and Fit
The shoe’s fit is snug, with reliable lacing and an overall comfortable feel on the foot. The new upper does offer some extra comfort, but beyond that, not much innovation has been introduced. If you’re used to the Cumulus 26, you’ll find the 27 to be quite similar. The shoe's lockdown is solid, making it a good fit for steady, moderate runs.
Ride and Performance
Where the Cumulus 27 stands out in its class is in its straightforward daily trainer function. The Flight Foam Blast Plus midsole provides cushioning, but it lacks the responsiveness found in some of its competitors, like the Ride 18 or NovaBlast 5. That said, the ride tends to soften up over time, so if you find it a bit firm at first, just give it a few runs to break in. For those who prefer a firmer, more stable ride without the plushness of softer, more cushioned shoes, this could be a solid choice.
However, if you’re someone who enjoys a more energetic, responsive ride, this may feel a little flat. In comparison to newer models in this category, like the Neo Zen or Evo, the Cumulus 27 feels less exciting. The ride is serviceable, but not necessarily remarkable.
Likes:
Affordability: At around £40, the Cumulus 27 is an affordable daily trainer. This price point makes it a good option if you're looking for a reliable shoe without breaking the bank.
Comfort: The comfort, particularly in the upper, is a definite plus, and the shoe provides solid lockdown.
Versatility: It’s a great shoe for everyday training runs, whether you’re doing 3, 4, or even 8 miles. It does the basics well without any frills.
Dislikes:
Lack of Innovation: The Cumulus 27 feels somewhat stale compared to its competitors, and it doesn't offer much in terms of innovation. The combination of Flight Foam Blast Plus and Pure Gel feels dated and lacks the excitement that newer models like the NovaBlast 5 offer.
Outsole Performance: The outsole grip can feel a bit sketchy at times, which may impact confidence during runs, especially in wet conditions.
Lack of Distinction: With so many other strong contenders in the market, like the Neo Zen and Ride 18, the Cumulus 27 struggles to stand out. In fact, it feels more like a rehash of previous models rather than a major update.
