The Brooks Ghost has long been one of the most popular daily trainers on the market, known for its consistency, comfort, and reliability. With the release of the Ghost 17, Brooks has introduced some key changes that improve the shoe in subtle but impactful ways—particularly in the midsole and ride quality. So, has the update done justice to its legacy? Let’s take a closer look.
What’s New in the Brooks Ghost 17?
One of the most significant updates to the Ghost 17 is the increase in stack height. The forefoot now has 26.5 mm (up from 23.5 mm), and the heel has been bumped up to 36.5 mm (up from 35.5 mm). This also reduces the heel-to-toe drop from 12 mm to 10 mm for the first time in the Ghost line—an important shift for runners looking for a slightly more balanced platform.
The shoe still uses DNA Loft v3, a nitrogen-infused foam that aims to strike a balance between softness and responsiveness. It isn’t an ultra-bouncy or plush foam, but it delivers a stable and smooth ride suitable for most training runs.
At 309g, the Ghost 17 isn’t the lightest shoe out there, but it still feels reasonable for what it offers in comfort and durability. The fit is true to size and provides a secure lockdown, making it a great option for everyday use.
Midsole Improvements: More Comfort Where It Counts
The previous version of the Ghost had a firm and somewhat lifeless forefoot, which made longer runs feel uncomfortable. That’s been addressed in the Ghost 17. The increased stack under the forefoot has transformed the ride, making it feel more cushioned, smoother, and livelier. The added foam gives a noticeable improvement in comfort, especially over longer distances, and adds a touch of toe-off energy that was lacking in older versions.
Interestingly, the extra stack in the heel isn’t as noticeable, but the overall ride feels better balanced as a result. The change in drop won’t affect most runners significantly, but it does contribute to the more modern feel of the shoe.
Style & Build: Aesthetics Are Finally Catching Up
Brooks has made solid improvements in the visual department. The Ghost 17 is available in some excellent new colorways, moving beyond the more traditional and safe choices the brand has been known for. The black-on-black version looks sleek and understated, but other options offer more personality for runners who prefer bold looks.
The shoe is well built, with solid outsole rubber coverage and a Clifton-like heel design that adds a touch of flair. It's easy to wear casually or for mixed-use like commuting or gym sessions.
Performance: A True All-Rounder
The Ghost 17 shines in its versatility. You can take it out for easy miles, mid-distance runs, or even some slightly uptempo efforts. It's not going to give you a race-day level of energy return, but for a daily trainer, it does a solid job. The ride is stable, cushioned, and predictable—ideal for runners who want a do-it-all shoe without surprises.
