The On Cloudsurfer Max is On Running’s max-stack daily trainer, replacing the Eclipse in the lineup and sitting just below the Cloudmonster in their range. It features CloudTec Phase technology (like the Cloudsurfer 2), a 37mm heel / 31mm forefoot stack with a 6mm drop, and a softer Helion foam midsole. Retail price: £170.
Build & Features
Upper: Engineered mesh with a fully gusseted knitted tongue for excellent lockdown.
Midsole: CloudTec Phase pods collapse in sequence (think “domino effect”) for a smoother roll-through.
Outsole: Durable rubber with a central cutout to reduce weight.
Weight: 380g in UK 9.5 (fits true to size).
No squeak: A welcome change from older On models.
Fit: Excellent midfoot lockdown and step-in comfort; premium feel.
Performance
Over 20 miles of testing (easy runs, daily mileage, and some pace changes), the Cloudsurfer Max performed reliably but didn’t excite. The ride is:
Capable but firm – it handles varied paces but lacks the energy return of competitors like the Saucony Hurricane 25 (PWRRUN PB foam) or Nike’s ZoomX models.
Stable and consistent – no instability issues, but also not the most lively shoe in its class.
Comfortable fit – premium lockdown and no hot spots, although some forefoot overlays can be felt on top of the foot.
Likes
Outstanding midfoot lockdown and step-in feel
Attractive design and detailing (laces/eyelets)
Durable outsole performance
CloudTec Phase is a nice idea, even if the benefit isn’t dramatically felt
No Speedboard — and no squeak
Dislikes
Ride feels dull compared to rival max-stack trainers
Firm midsole lacks bounce or “secret sauce”
Heavy in hand compared to similar-stack competitors
High £170 price tag without standout performance edge
Verdict
The Cloudsurfer Max is a good shoe for loyal On fans who enjoy the brand’s firm, stable feel and want a high-stack option for daily miles. It’s comfortable, well-built, and looks great — but in a crowded max-cushion market, it lacks the energetic ride and innovation of top competitors. For runners seeking a more responsive or softer ride at this price, options like the Saucony Hurricane 25 or New Balance’s max-stack offerings may be better value.
Best for:
On Running loyalists
Runners who prefer a firmer, stable max-stack trainer
Daily mileage and easy runs where comfort matters more than speed
