I’ll be honest: I didn’t expect much from the Mizuno Wave Sky 9. Another max-stack “boat” of a shoe, I thought. But after putting in some solid miles—especially in the middle of marathon training—I’ve been genuinely surprised at how good this shoe is.
My thoughts
Let’s get it out the way: the colourway is banging. It looks fantastic on foot, and I’ll admit, I love glancing down mid-run just to admire it. Straight away, though, the comfort really stood out. This is not a clunky max-stack shoe—it’s smooth, cushioned, and more versatile than I expected.
Stats & Features
Price: £164
Stack height: 44mm heel / 38mm forefoot (6mm drop)
Weight: 315g (UK 9.5, true to size)
Midsole: Dual-foam setup – nitrogen-infused EVA on top (softer) + firmer EVA below for stability
Outsole: Good rubber coverage for durability and grip
Upper: Breathable mesh with secure lockdown and comfortable lacing
It’s a big shoe, but Mizuno have done a great job balancing comfort with stability thanks to that wide base and dual-foam setup. Heel strikers especially will find this works really well.
Ride & Performance
The ride is where the Wave Sky 9 shines. It’s not bouncy or overly soft—it’s just comfortable and smooth. Think of it like a more runnable version of the New Balance More, or even an upgrade over the Brooks Glycerin Max (which I like, but this beats it).
While it is technically heavy on the scales, it doesn’t feel that way underfoot. The cushioning feels balanced, the upper is breathable, and lockdown is solid. It’s a cruising machine—perfect for easy miles, recovery runs, and long runs at relaxed paces. You can even pick up the pace a little when you need to finish strong, though it’s not a tempo shoe.
Where It Fits in a Rotation
The Wave Sky 9 is ideal for:
Easy/recovery runs
Long runs at steady paces
Daily cruising when comfort is priority
